NTD magazine was founded in 2006 as an independent Chinese-language investigative publication, committed to reporting facts that powerful interests seek to conceal.

In early 2020, when most global media were still dismissing "lab leak" as a conspiracy theory, NTD's reporters and analysts had already begun systematically tracking, analyzing, and reporting evidence pointing to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

In 2023, NTD was forced to cease publication after personnel linked to China's national security apparatus sabotaged its operations. Opening: January 31, 2020 — Late at Night

Washington, D.C. Just before midnight.

An email arrives in the inbox of Anthony Fauci, Director of NIAID. The subject line is blank.

The sender: Kristian Andersen, an immunologist at Scripps Research, one of America's foremost experts in viral sequence analysis.

That day, the United States had just confirmed its first case of human-to-human transmission. The White House had announced a travel ban on China.

Andersen wrote:

…some features look potentially engineered. Eddie, Bob, Mike and myself all find the genome inconsistent with expectations from evolutionary theory. There are a few key questions we are trying to work through.

Fauci responded at 12:29 a.m., sending his deputy a one-word all-caps message: IMPORTANT. Attached was a 2015 paper co-authored by Ralph Baric and Shi Zhengli, on enhancing bat coronavirus infectivity in human respiratory cells — funded by NIH, approved by Fauci's NIAID.

Six years later, this late-night email appeared in a 400-page declassified file.

Volume One: Anomalous Trajectories and Vanishing Signals

Chapter 1: Wuhan's Countdown

1. September 12, 2019: The Database Goes Dark

On the night of September 12, 2019, the Wuhan Institute of Virology's core database — containing genetic sequences of more than 22,000 bat viruses — was abruptly taken offline without notice or explanation. NTD analysis documented that China began a systematic cover-up from the earliest days. Based on documents that later became public:

January 1, 2020:  Hubei health officials called a genomics company and ordered: stop testing related samples; destroy existing samples; release no information; publish no papers.

January 1, 2020:  Wuhan police summoned eight people for "spreading rumors" — later confirmed to include Dr. Li Wenliang.

January 3, 2020:  China's National Health Commission issued a written non-disclosure directive prohibiting unauthorized release of pathogen testing information.

January 14, 2020:  The NHC director told provincial officials in a secret videoconference that human-to-human transmission may exist. Publicly, officials still claimed there was "no clear evidence."

January 20, 2020:  Zhong Nanshan publicly confirmed human-to-human transmission — nearly three weeks after Li Wenliang and others had first raised the alarm.

Chapter 2: Early Epidemiological Anomalies

1. Cuomo's Data

In May 2020, NTD reported that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo disclosed at a press conference:

We were shocked to find that 66% of new hospitalizations were people who had been staying home, not going out frequently.

Important clarification: This statistic means that 66% of hospitalized patients had been living at home before admission. It does not confirm they were infected at home, and cannot be used to conclude that lockdowns were generally ineffective. 2. NTD's Early Genetic Feature Analysis

NTD articles noted that SARS-CoV-2 carries a specific furin cleavage site at the S1/S2 junction of its spike protein that was unusual among the closely related Sarbecoviruses known at the time. (Note: furin cleavage sites do occur naturally in other coronaviruses; the point is that this specific site was not observed in the then-known close relatives of SARS-CoV-2.)

This observation later became one of the core arguments adopted by the House report and the White House page in 2025. The WHO's 2025 report, however, found that available genomic data cannot prove artificial engineering, and natural spillover remains one of the primary hypotheses.

NTD reporting noted early that calling COVID-19 a "pneumonia" significantly understated the disease. Shi Zhengli's team collected samples from the cave and identified hundreds of coronavirus-related sequences, including a virus initially called "4991," later renamed "RaTG13."

Two important clarifications: First, "4991" and "RaTG13" are not two separate viruses. 4991 was an early partial sequence; RaTG13 is the complete sequence of the same virus, formally published later.

Second, RaTG13 shares 96.3% genome identity with SARS-CoV-2, making it one of the known close relatives — but not the closest in all regions. BANAL-52, discovered subsequently, is closer to SARS-CoV-2 in certain spike protein regions. Neither is a direct precursor. No intermediate species or virus bridging the evolutionary gap has been found.

Regarding the miners' illness: early reports attributed illness to fungal infection; later accounts raised viral pneumonia as an alternative explanation. Both explanations have been recorded in writing, but no definitive conclusion has been accepted by all parties. The ODNI's 2023 declassified report noted that available information is not diagnostic.

Peter Daszak described the results as producing "minor clinical symptoms." Declassified files revealed that in some experimental groups, mouse mortality rates and viral lung loads were dramatically higher than officially reported. On March 17, 2020, "The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2" was published in Nature Medicine, declaring definitively that the virus was not a laboratory construct. For two years, this paper was the most-cited "authority" in mainstream media and academia.

Andersen wrote in a February 12, 2020 email to Nature when submitting the paper:

…prompted by Jeremy Farrar, Anthony Fauci, and Francis Collins, among others…

Fauci's public stance from April 17, 2020 onward was consistent: the virus was naturally transmitted from animals to humans; lab engineering and lab leak were impossible. For four years, "lab leak" was publicly treated as taboo.

His private diaries reveal more complexity in his early thinking.

Diary entry, January 26, 2020 — just three days after Wuhan's lockdown:

Based on the epidemiological and genomic data, the index case occurred in early December 2019. It has no relationship with the Huanan Seafood Market. We now know the market was not the source; it was just an amplifier.

Face masks: On March 8, 2020, Fauci said publicly that masks for ordinary people were not useful. Two months later, he reversed course, telling the public this was based on "new scientific data." An internal email revealed his actual reasoning:

We should probably update our recommendation regarding masks. People are walking around with masks, and we should be consistent with what's being done.

On July 29, 2026, Rand Paul convened a Senate hearing based on the released documents. 3. August 6, 2026: Contempt of Congress Vote

On August 6, 2026, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted 8 to 5 along party lines to pass a contempt of Congress resolution. Rand Paul subsequently referred the matter to the Department of Justice for criminal contempt proceedings.
